Remembering the days of vinyl

With the resurgence of interest in vinyl LP records - and the opening of new independent record shops at various places across the county - let's remember some of the record shops that some of us may have visited in our youth in the 1970s and 80s.

Please post your memories via the Comments link below.

And any photos of the old shops would be much appreciated - email to ournottinghamshire@gmail.com

Here's a couple to be going on with:-

NOTTINGHAM

Revolver Records in Nottingham of course

BEESTON

W Payton's record shop 44 High Road.  A bit earlier than the 1970s/80s, but this one has added interest.  If you look on the picture you will see under his name "Notts cricket XI" - presumably the same W (or Wilfred) Payton who played cricket for Notts? Wilfred Payton - Wikipedia

NEWARK

Norman Pride records was on Appletongate

R&K Records was at No.8 Clinton Court in St Marks precinct.  GOAD maps first show it at that location in 1995 (earlier site was on Barnbygate), and the following newspaper article tells us that it closed in 2007:-

 Newark Advertiser 2nd March 2007 (p.7)

"Record Shop to Close: A record shop in Newark that has been trading for 20 years will be closing this month.  R and K Records at Clinton Arms Court is closing on March 17.  The owner of the shop, Mr Richard Young, said they were closing because the lease had expired and the new rent was too high for them.  Two people will lose thier jobs as a result.  Mr Young said that other factors such as the threat of Asda coming to Newark and the decline of the music industry were also partly to blame.  He said: 'It is sad for the town.'  Mr Young first opened in the town with a store in Barnbygate and moved to his present shop 12 years ago.  He said he had no plans to set up another record shop elsewhere.  The shop is having a sale before closure".

Tracks located on Castlegate Newark, 1980s/90s
