The J. Oman identified here is perhaps the father of that mentioned opposite?

TRADE DIRECTORIES

From local Trade Directories of Nottinghamshire we find the following entries

1865 - James Oman - entry in 'Perfects Almanac of Newark' for that year (See illustration opposite)

1869 - James OMAN : Carver, gilder and photographer 40 Appletongate [Newark], and tobacconist 7 1/2 Middlegate [Newark]

NB the house number "7 1/2" probably represents a subdivision of a former single property.  Street numbering in the 1880s and 1890s would make it difficult to identify the property today.

1872 - James OMAN : Entry as at 1869

1881 - James OMAN : Entry as at 1869

1885 - Thomas OMAN :

1894 & 1897 - No entries

1912 - James OMAN : 183 Arkwright Street, Nottingham; cycle repairer

NEWARK CEMETERY BURIAL REGISTERS

From records of Newark Cemetery on London Road can be found two OMAN burials:

Buried 5th January 1887 - OMAN, S.B.C. of James

NB - the meaning if "S.B.C. of James" is not known

Buried 8th July 1881 - OMAN, Hilda Mary

I've found an advert for J. Oman, photographer, in Appletongate, Newark from J. Perfect's Almanac of Newark (1865). Can I send it through as a scan to go on this page?

Yes, please email to ournottinghamshire@gmail.com and we can add it to the site. If its from 1865 then its unlikely to be the james Oman referred to who was born in c.1852 (too young to be in business by 1865). Possibly his father?

I have around 20 original carte de visite photographs taken in the studio of James Oman in my own collection - none of the sitters however identified however (as is normal!). Other contemporary Newark photographers were Samuel Frost of Kirk Gate, John McLeod of Trent Bridge, and William Talbot of Castle Gate.
