From the past To the present
Pictures of Newark then and now
By Newark MIND
This was a project created by members of Newark MIND men's group.
The project involved researching locations around Newark, photographing them, editing and cataloguing, and finally comparing them with old photos of the same spot borrowed from the Local Studies department at Newark Library. Here are some of the results:
Little changed: Newark Market Place in 1852 (left) and today (right).
Our photo (right) shows that a used car lot has replaced the old cottages from 1933.
Demolition of a fine old house in 1965 made way for today's shopping infill (right).
Our modern view of Baldertongate is still recognisable in the old photo.
In the North West corner of Newark Market Place - Only the black and white building at the top of the yard (left) survives today (right), as Ash's Yard has been redeveloped to form Queen's Head Court.
