Holy Wells and healing springs of Nottinghamshire – a gazetteer and field guide ISBN 978-0-9560442-2-8

New book on Nottinghamshire’s Holy Wells, mineral springs, spas and folklore waters.

55 pages and 28 colour and black and white photos many photographed for the first time, gives full details on the history of each sites and how to find them. A total to 94 sites are included, of which full details are given are listed.

Read about the legends behind Friar Tuck’s Well, discover the remains of  the spa bath of St. John’s Well found surprisingly beneath a modern kitchen and still full of water, untangle the confusion behind Watnall’s Holy Well and many more. The books claims to have rediscovered two lost or largely forgotten sites – Mansfield’s St. Mary’s Well or Bath Spring and what the author believes to be Southwell’s Lord’s Well, and uncovers a number of sites via old records which are not included elsewhere (such as Harte’s 2008 work on English Holy Wells). There is also a four page inventory of ancient well names and full bibliography.

Your work in researching and publishing your findings will be of great value in the future, especially when you can still locate wells and record details of where they are....I am impressed by how many wells you have managed to track down in a county that I thought was sparsely populated by them!  I doubt anyone else will be able to better your research.”

Janet Bord, co-author of Sacred Waters and author of Curses and Cures and Holy Wells of Britain a guide.

“The indefatigable Ross Parish has been researching holy wells for as long as I have, and is gradually publishing the results in a series of booklets, of which there are now four covering English counties which have never been covered before in this depth. The newest two, for Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, do incorporate material from earlier publications but go far beyond them. Ross’s book are well worth while- in fact, indispensable.”

James Rattue, author of The Living Stream-Holy wells in a historical context.
