Arnold Wakes

The Arnold Wakes were held in September. The church in Arnold is dedicated to St Mary. St Mary has a number of feast days throughout the year (three in September alone). Her birthday is commonly celebrated on 8th September, and the Wakes would probably have been arranged to fall on the Sunday following this date.

This second photo has the date of 1980 on Picture the Past, but look at the costumes! Unless they all turned up in fancy dress, I think someone was mistaken...
