Son of Mr & Mrs Richard E Hindley, Victoria Street, Newark.  Husband of Jessie Louisa Hindley, 55 Lime Grove, Newark.  An old Magnus boy, he entered Messrs. Peacock & Wilsons (now Lloyds) Bank and later took up employment in Nottingham and Newark. 

He was secretary of the Old Magnusians’ football club for some years and an exceptable(?) cricketer.  Playing with Newark Reserve and more recently Farndon CC for whom he bowled very successfully for several seasons.  Also a prominent member of Newark Rowing Club. 

He joined the Navy in 1915, obtaining an appointment as an assistant-paymaster and was for two years on yacht patrol.  Later he was on a battleship with the Grand Fleet, but applied for special services.  While his new ship was refitting in December he came home on leave.  Leaves a widow and four young children.  His brother 2nd/Lt R.B. Hindley MGC has recently returned from France with trench fever. 

NB HMS Cullist was a 'Q-ship', a merchantman equipped with hidden guns.  Also operated as ‘Jurassic’ and ‘Westphalia’.  Sunk by U97 off Drogheda with the loss of 41 lives.

I have just found your excellent website whilst putting together a piece on my late mother's cousin, Robert Muir Hindley. In addition to family material I have a photo of Robert in uniform and a letter written by a surviving member of the crew of the Cullist to his brother Harold. The story is also told in 'Q Ships and their story' by E. Keble Chatterton pub. 1972 ISBN 85177 O55X I would be delighted to pass these on if you could use them. Pat

Would you be interested in making up your own page about the Hindleys to put on the site (which could include the photos and a scan of the letter you mention). Now that you are registered with the site its quite easy to make a page.

hello I read with interest the comments about Robert Hindley as he is my Great Grandfather , my grandmother was Nancy Derry his daughter. I would be very interested in seeing the letter and the photo if at all possible.

Dear Pat

Robert Muir Hindley is my Great Grandfather and I only have one picture of him rowing with the straightest back in a four.

i would love a copy of him in his uniform. Could we swap?

it would mean so much. His daughter, my Grandmother, was the most amazing, kind, strong and family orientated person.

i would love to communicate.
