Having made his first trip to Greece, Byron returned to Newstead in August 1811, arriving only hours after his mother’s death there, aged only 46 (Some say this was caused by getting the bill for the curtains). Although theirs had been a stormy love/hate relationship, he felt unable to attend her funeral at nearby Hucknall, but spent the afternoon boxing instead. After the 1812 publication of the first two Cantos of Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, he found himself the most popular writer in England. Within a few years he became the most famous and influential author in the world.
