A bomb dropped near Hawthorn Street [in the Meadows, Nottingham] and I was knocked off the top bunk in the air raid shelter. I was sent to the Children's Hospital with a perforated ear drum. My sister was in the shelter at the time and she never woke up although Grandad carried her home afterwards wrapped in a blanket and put her to bed.
