Arkwright Street was originally a main thoroughfare running almost north/south along the eastern edge of The Meadows area of Nottingham. Most of it was demolished during re-development during the 1970s, leaving a small section remaining.

In May 2012 many of the remaining buildings were demolished in preparation for the extension of the Nottingham Tram to Clifton and Beeston.

My parents were Nottingham people, but in the War my Dad was sent to work in Rugby; so they moved to Leicester,but my extended family still lived in Nottingham. From the age of seven on most weekends my Mum would put me on the Barton's bus to go to my Grans. I would be very excited as the bus crossed Trent Bridge, then travelled up Arkwright Street as I knew my Granny would be waiting at Broadmarsh bus station. Pat Thomas

In the top picture as I remember in the early 50's the corner of the building just in sight at the top right of the picture was The Midland Station, coming down the next building was a bank (I think) but the next one was the Queens Cinema, I remember going there most Saturday afternoons for the kids matanie it was 6d or 2.5p in currant money for a seat in the stalls.  One film sticks in my mind was    "Captain Horatio Hornblower" among many others.  Those were happy days when a kid of 7 or 8 years old could disappear for hours on end and the parents didn't have to worry
