An absorbing pictorial record, showcasing the changing face of the city

By Douglas Whitworth

Over the centuries, Nottingham has seen significant changes to its buildings and streets; some have been an  improvement and others less so. From the first ever Boots chemist shop to the tram systems of two different centuries, the past continues to influence the present. In this new volume, local historian Douglas Whitworth delves into the changing face of the city, looking at all that has changed while also displaying all that has remained the same.

Featuring exclusive images and previously unpublished material, Nottingham Then & Now  takes the reader on a journey through the streets of city, comparing scenes of yesteryear with those same scenes of today. From the Flying Horse Hotel to the Victoria Railway station, Douglas Whitworth captures every aspect of Nottingham life, juxtaposing the people of the past with their twenty-first-century descendants.

  • 90 archive and modern images capturing life how it once was—and is today.
  • Each photograph is accompanied by detailed captions, drawing from the authors original research.
  • Featuring streets and buildings, shops and businesses, and people at work, all aspects of city life are covered.

Douglas Whitworth has been an amateur photographer since the end of the Second World War, and since then he has photographed Nottingham, London and Paris and has been compiling books of photographs for the last twenty years. Douglas’s other books include A Century of Nottingham and Nottingham in the 1960s & 70s, both published by The History Press.
