Newark's Sunday School Festival Holiday
A Bun and a Bottle of Pop
By Tim Warner
One of the best remembered and surely most colourful holiday activities in Newark-on-Trent in the pre-war years was the annual non-conformist Sunday school festival.
Newark ’s annual Sunday school treat was held the third Thursday (later Saturday) in June. Floats (or ‘devices’) assembled in pre-ordained order in the market place to be judged for inventiveness and splendour.
Some were truly exceptional (as these pictures show) and were all the more remarkable when you consider that they were temporary constrctions, dismantled within a few days of the event.
Follow the photographs in order to see how Newark's Sunday School parades progressed throughout the day
