Nottingham's Gay Bars and Clubs
From the 1940s to the present day
By David Edgley
The link at the bottom of the notes takes you to a sequence of pages on Nottinghamshire's Rainbow Heritage's website.
The pages detail the numerous venues (past and present) which have served as gay and lesbian bars. From the George and the Flying Horse in times when being a gay man could result in a prison sentence, through to the current crop of bars.
Two of the bars are shown here:
The Flying Horse on Cheapside off the Market Square (now fronting a small shopping mall) was the main gay bar in the 1960s. Sometimes known as "The Pansy's Parlour" its reputation was said to be worldwide.
The Foresters Arms (now the New Foresters) dates back to 1958 and has over 50 years continuous service as a lesbian bar which also welcomes gay men.
At the February 2008 Nottinghamshire's Rainbow Heritage exhibition at View from the Top, current manager Debbie Law was presented with a certificate to recognise the 50th anniversary.
