Edited by Richard Gaunt

During the 1820s and 30s, Nottinghamshire witnessed a number of dramatic episodes in its political and social history and Godfrey Tallents (1812-1839) had a ring-side seat from which to observe them.

Tallents’ diaries provide vivid new testimony concerning the Reform Bill Riots of 1831, the turbulent electoral history of Newark , the early political experience of William Ewart Gladstone and the administration of law and order in the county.  They also illuminate the busy round of social and legal engagement which he pursued in the first decade of his professional life.

REVIEWS

“… a valuable source for Newark and Nottinghamshire history …an excellent edition of an important local diary”  (Richard Brown writing for The Historical Association).

"The diaries provide a unique and valuable picture of the life of the Newark and Southwell elite in the decade covered.  Local historians will be grateful to the owner, John tallents, for sharing his inheritance with us, and to Dr. Gaunt for providing such a well-informed edition" (Professor Stanley Chapman writin in the Nottinghamshire Historian Spring/Summer 2011)
