Lieut. John Cedric Warwick [of Upton]

Lieut: South Notts hussars

Born 1895, died 1918

Third son of John Francis Warwick (of the Newark brewing firm of Warwick & Richardson) of Upton Hall.  Received commission in the South Notts Hussars Yeomanry in 1914.  Served in Salonika, he was invalided home, but returned to see service in Ireland, Egypt and Palestine.

On 27th May 1918 he was aboard the transport ship “Leasowe Castle” travelling in convoy off Alexandria when the convoy was attacked by enemy submarines with the “Leasowe Castle” being torpedoed and sunk within two hours.

Of the 3000 or so men on board, 130 soldiers and 10 crew were lost, mainly as a result of the initial explosion.

Lieut. Warwick was initially reported ‘Missinge believed drwned’, being later recorded as ‘Drowned at sea from H.T. Leasowe Castle’.  He was 23 years of age.

John Cedric Warwick was commemorated on the Chatby Memorial, Alexandria, Egypt.  In Upton his family caused an individual plaque to be erected in the parish church.  The family also donated a small table to the church which is used for flower displays.
