Joseph Ryalls, shoemaker, appears on the 1841 census aged 24, living at home, with his parents William and Elizabeth in the now lost village of Rufford.

Situated on Rufford Lane, close to Rufford Mill, and directly north of Rufford Abbey

Later that same year he married Jane Mawe at Sheffield parish church (now the cathedral).

By the census of 1851 Joseph was listed as living at Lidget Road in Edwinstowe with wife and son William.  His profession is given as 'journeyman cordwainer' (ie someone who has completed their apprenticeship and who, as a cordwainer, worked with fine, virgin leather).

In the census 1861 age 44, at South Forest in Edwinstowe with Jane and children William,James and Annie working as a cordwainer.

In the year 1871 age 54 in Town Street he's working as a shoemaker with Jane and James. In 1874 Jane age 57 dies at Swinton South Yorkshire.

1881 age 64 living at 35 Kilnhurst Road, Rawmarsh with daughter Anne 31 still a cordwainer!

Census 1891 in November age 74 years as a shoemaker he dies at 32 Park Street, Wombwell, South Yorkshire
