The group started in 1992 as the Dukeries U3A (University of the Third Age) on the initiative of Roy Snowden, the then Principal of the Dukeries Complex. The particular nature of the Complex provided an ideal situation for such a group. Responsibility for its development was delegated to Graham Cross, Vice-principal for Campus and Outreach.
