The Meadows History Project

Our beginnings

The Meadows History project was started in 2006 by the ‘Pride in the Meadows’ Team on the Meadows Partnership Trust. The idea behind the Project was to celebrate the Meadows, its people, events, buildings and places.

Early on in the project, we held a reminiscence evening which was well attended and gave residents an opportunity to tell interesting stories about their lives before the demolition of the Old Meadows in the 1970’s. We had speakers from the Museum Service to give help and advice. We went on a History Walk around the Meadows. We set up a display about the History of Sport in the Meadows. More recently we created a display of the History of the Meadows Library for the re-opening of the refurbished building in 2009.

The Project celebrates the history of the Meadows through the memories and interests of residents, past, present and future. Anyone who has or has had an interest or a remembrance of the Meadows is welcome to join the Group.

Linking in with the Meadows Library

Early in 2010 we joined forces with the Library Sounding Board to decide how we could move the Project forward. At a well attended meeting we had a brainstorm about how we could proceed.

What was decided:

1) We set up a website.

2) We meet regularly.

3) People follow their own interests which they can share with members and put on the website.

4) We have speakers.

5) We have regular displays.

6) We hold witness seminars with residents of all ages to record memories of the Meadows.

7) We have Events to celebrate the history of the area.

8) We build up an archive of documents, photographs and CD’s.
