L/Cpl. Walter Hunt died on 27th September 1914, making him one of the earliest Nottinghamshire fatalities of the Great War.
Today, his is the only name on the 1914-18 War Memorial in the church of St. George the Martyr in his home village of South Clifton.
Walter Hunt, of London Row, South Clifton, was a career soldier, having enlisted for the army in May 1906 when he was 18 years old.
He served with the King's Royal Rifle Corps, and despite receiving 56 days detention for being AWOL for five days in 1907, was promoted to Lance Corporal in February 1909.
In 1913 he was brought home from serving in India, and landed at Rouen on 14th August 1914.
He died from wounds received during the Battle of Mons.
His medals - the 1914 Star and the Victory Medal - were sent to his father in South Clifton.
