Wallbank's Cycles

By Stephen Wallwork

This building is on the south-west corner of the junction of Broadgate and Humber Road, Beeston.  I bought a cycle there when I first came to this area in September 1949 and Mr Wallbank was very helpful then and every time I returned for repairs. The photo dates show that he finished trading 1983/4 - perhaps he had died.  The building is now used as offices.

The 1984 photo also shows the recently built 'Broadgate House', then used as additional Council offices, on the south-east corner. (It is an unfortunate choice of name, since that was the name of the house/observatory, further east along Broadgate, of the nineteenth century meteorologist and astronomer E J Lowe FRS, now housing the East Midlands Universities Air Squadron.)
