In Nottingham, Stareys Ltd (later Starey & Woolleys Ltd originally with premises on Derby Road and later on Lower Parliament Street), had been established as long ago as 1786 as makers of high-class carriages for the county nobility and gentry.

Around 1900 they also began making car bodies, and many fine examples of coachwork were produced by the firm built onto chassis’ from Rolls-Royce, Daimler and others.  In the early years most of the bodies for London taxis were built by Stareys.

It is thought probable that they also undertook work for a number of the fledgling motor car manufacturing businesses in Nottingham.
