This was the town's first Free Public Library, opened in 1883.  (There had been libraries in the town before this, but you had to pay to be a member)

It was called the 'Gilstrap' Free Library because it was given to the town by Sir William Gilstrap, a wealthy local maltster.

Newark Library occupied this building for over 100 years until 1985, when the new all-glass library opened across the other side of the town.
