Some descriptions of the village from early county histories and guide books

"Averham should be visited on account of the exceptionally beautiful situation of its church (St.Michael), which stands on the bank of the Trent, in a churchyard timbered by some grand old trees.

"Across the river a pleasant expanse of meadow stretches to Newark, whose spire is so conspicuous an object throughout this district.
