Arnold - An Introduction
The 'Guide House', Red hill, Arnold.
Photographed in July 1977 by Reg Baker
Some descriptions of the town from early county histories and guide books
"Arnold is no longer the pleasant village on the borders of Sherwood Forest which it used to be, but instead has become a centre for industry, so that little or no charm remains.
"Collieries and the hosiery trade claim the attention of most of the inhabitants.......
"At the foot of Red Hill on the main road from Nottingham to mansfield is an old house known as 'The Guide House' where travellers could obtain guides to take them through the devious tracks of the adjacent forest".
