Retford's Rifle range at Bolham Butts

The rifle range known as Bolham Butts was used by service men and volunteers.

A well-known butt marker at the beginning of the 20th century was Sgt. Henry Brown who, for some years, lived at Osborne Vaults in Carolgate.

Brown was a cooper by trade, as was his father before him, who lived in a cottageat Whinney Moor, until he moved to Whitehoue Farm, Little Gringley.

Sgt. Brown completed 50 years service with the volunteers.  His brother, George, meanwhile, was for many years steward at the Retford Liberal Club in Grove Street.
