Birthplace of Dr. Erasmus Darwin

Grandfather of Charles Darwin

Dr. Erasmus Darwin, physician, philosopher, poet and philanthropist, was born at Elston Hall, near Newark, December 12, 1731.

Darwin died at Breadsall Priory, near Derby (where he had resided about two years,) April 10, 1802, and was interred in Breadsall Church, where the following inscription is to be read on the monument erected to his memory:-

Elston Hall, Pevsner (p.122) dates to c.1700, much remodelled.  The main front is dated 1756, with gabled wings.  Over the slightly projecting entrance bay there is a shaped parapet  with a half-figure of a drummer boy.  The centre of the garden front, canted out between the wings, is of brick dated 1837, with mullioned widows and gothic glazing to the porch.  Elsewhere there are 19th century and later additions.
