Women Workers at A. Ransome & Co., Newark
At the time of the Armistice, says Ron Wood in his history of Ransome & Marles, there were 536 men and 525 women employed in the factory. About 300 of the women were machine operators.
As the men returned from the trenches the management was under pressure to restore male workers to their pre-war skilled positions, and by 1920 the workforce at R&Ms comprised 816 men, 200 boys and 360 women - only 60 of whom were machine operators
