Wine-making in Chilwell

A lost village art?

Everard Guilford in his guide to 'Nottinghamshire' (London, Methuen, 1910, pp70-71) quotes from the writings of Barnaby Googe from 1577, in which he says:-

"There is beside Nottingha an auncient house house called Chylwel in which house remayneth yet as an auncient monument in a great wyndowe of Glasse, the whole order of planting, proyning, stamping and pressing of Vines.

"Beside, there is yet also growing an old Vine that yeeldes a grape sufficient to make a right good wine as was lately prooved by a Gentlewoman in the saide house"
