Village Cross - Balderton

In 1865 (20th Sept) The Newark Advertiser newspaper reported that the remains of Balderton Cross were moved to a new location.

The move, said the paper "was greatly to the gratification of the inhabitants, it having been made the daily resort for idlers and noisy children.  The removal is considered a public benefit".

Not everyone agreed, however.

In an adjoining column in the same edition of the paper was printed the following letter to the Editor:-

"Sir - The remains of the old stone cross in this village has [sic] during the past week been removed from its original position to the front of my house.....

"These stones, where they are now place [is] greatly to my annoyance and that of the neighbourhood, as well as depreciating the worth of my property.  Will you oblige by the publication of this letter, I having a great desire to know who gave the authority for such removal.

"I am not aware why I should be selected to bear the annoyance that would arise to myself and family should these old relics be allowed to remain where placed.  In fact, it is not my intention that the stones should be set up near my property"
