Newark Northgate

Newark Northgate station was opened by the Great Northern Railway Co. in 1852 and after 162 years serving the Kings Cross Edinburgh main line it is still as busy as ever. Mallard would have passed through this station on that historic day in 1937 when a few miles south at Stoke Bank she broke the world speed record for a steam locomotive 124.5mph and still holds the record today. The reason she was named Mallard was her designer Sir Nigel Gresley was a keen bird watcher so he named a lot of this class (A4) after birds, some of them were later renamed.                                                          

The pictures were taken at Northgate station in 2014, the green streamlined one - a sister engine to Mallard -would have passed through Newark regularly until the mid 1960s and is still used on special expresses on this line.
