Kirk white street, the meadows
By Tina Martin
I lived at 47 kirk white street from about 1959 to 1968. I lived next to the chip shop. I attended arkwright street school and remember some of my classmates names as being Diane Marshall, ksren whittington, michael dwayne, paul smith, lorna smith and christopher grocock. I played on waterway street and queens drive park. I remember catching the bus on a saturday to go into town to the ABC cinema kids club. I used to walk to the trent bridge garden by the river trent. Once I found a stray dog and bought it home. I asked my mum if I could keep it. She said no!. I had to take it back and "lose" it. There were lots of stray dogs in those days unfortunately. I was so upset. I loved living on kirk white street. All those alleyways were like a maze. Great fun. Our house had a communal back yard with outside toilets. Our tin bath hung outside the back door ready for our once a week bath! My dad used to take me to the cattle market on a saturday. He bought me 2 white rabbits who used to have great fun running round the back yard. Its such a shame they pulled it all down because, in my opinion, the community spirit and "soul" went when it was demolished. Regards tina martin nee swain
