According to the book A Visit to Sherwood Forest (Anon.) (Mansfield: Collinson, 1850, p.24), Joseph Tootel, a worker at the Rock Valley Mills in Mansfield, invented "the fluted or Grooved rollers used in cotton spinning, and now known by the name of 'stretchers'".
