Humber Works, Beeston
A blue plaque for Thomas Humber, car, bike and motorbike manufacturer
By Alice Cave
On a sunny Sunday afternoon in late August 2011, a blue plaque was unveiled on part of the old Humber works building in Beeston. The Dojo gym and the Talk Back premises had been roped into the event, so that twenty or so vintage cars, two Humber motorbikes and two Humber bicycles could be displayed.
Several of the cars came courtesy of the 'Humber Register'. One of the bicycles was on loan from the Industrial Museum at Wollaton.
Thomas Humber came to Beeston from Sheffield. His first factory was near Beeston railway station. However, he soon moved to factory premises off Humber Road. There he began making bicycles, but later made motorbikes and cars too. The 'Wheel of life' logo can still be seen on the front of one of the buildings. An picture of Humber's former house in Beeston can be found here.
A series of Blue Plaques is being put up around the Beeston and Stapleford areas promoted and organised by Beeston and District Civic Society, the Beeston and District Local History Society and the Stapleford and District Local History Society.
