Pat Hodson of Bingham sends the following additional information about J.E. Flower:-

Birth registered at Newark in 1880 (3rd Quarter -July-Aug-Sept) GRO ref: Vol.7b page 401

1891 Census shows John Edward (whose age is erroneously given as 16) living in Mount Lane, Newark, with his mother (Hannah) and two other brothers and sisters.  Their father, Frederick Charles Flower, had died in 1887.

The 1901 Census shows John E Flower - now a 'Corporal Royal Mariner Navyman' aged 20 - living as stepson to James & Hannah Dewsbury at an address in Main Street, Normanton-on-Soar near Loughborough.

The 1911 Census shows John Edward Flower as resident in barracks at the Royal Marine Depot at Walmer near Deal in Kent.

The "recent naval engagement in the North sea" referred to in the newspaper cutting opposite is known as 'The Battle of Dogger Bank' 23rd January 1915
