Finger Posts, Milestones & Signposts

Milestones firs appeared in Britain in Roman times (although they remained few and far between for centuries afterwards).

Signposts - or originally fingerposts - began to appear after parliamentary acts of 1766 and 1773 made their use on turnpikes compulsory.

The increase in road traffic in the 20th century brought systemmatic road numbering, causing many older signposts which simply gave distances to be removed and replaced.

In country areas, however, where they indicated routes via back roads, they may still survive.  These are often distinguished by a 'county roundel' at the top of the post.
