Sir Augustus Charles Gregory

By Philip H Marsh

Arguably the most successful explorer in Australia, Augustus Gregory and his four brothers were all born in Farnsfield. In 1829 they left with their parents to start a new life in the recently established Swan River Colony.

Trained as a surveyor, as a young man Augustus showed great enterprise in the expansion of the colony and was appointed to lead the North Australia Exploring Expedition in 1855, the most ambitious and expensive expedition ever sponsored by the British Government. He was knighted in 1903 in recognition of his contribution to Australian exploration.

The book outlines his life and achievements and includes biographical details of his siblings.
