Denmans Head was a former Inn and prior to 1820 the Inn was known as the 'Kings Head' the name was changed by the landlord Mr W Cooper, after he was delighted at the defence by Mr Denman (who then became Lord Justice Denman) at the trial of Queen Caroline also known as Caroline of Brunswick (the wife of King George IV).

Queen Caroline's trial drew excitement, as did her acquittal.

Lord Denman lived in North Nottinghamshire and he was also involved in the trial of Jeremiah Brandreth. Mr Coopers father was a well known highly respected surgeon from Mansfield.
