Family stories say Bert Cree was a Lancer in the First World War, although his medals indicate a Driver in the Army Service Corps.

Following the First World War he is presumed to have remained in the Reserves as he was called up again during the General Strike.

It was during the General Strike that his blacksmiths business in Farndon failed.  He subsequently opened a smithy at the rear of the Cock Inn (now Chesters) in Balderton.  This business prospered until 1939 when hunting ceased and there were no horses to shoe.

He then went to work at Worthington-Simpson in the Smithy Shop until retirement.

(The WWII medal is a mystery).
