This crossing on the Nottingham - Grantham line was installed in 1851, and it is believed that the signal box was constructed at about the same time.
The crossing has always been manned, but Network Rail has plans to make all crossings on the line automatic by 2015 - either operated remotely by a control centre in Derby, or through obstacle detector technology (whereby trains are stopped automatically if an obstacle is detected on the crossing). This last is a system widely used across Europe.
As part of this move to automatic crossings, and with no Listed status existing on the building, it seems likely that the Chapel Lane signal box will be demolished.
