Hayton is a very small village but every now and then  we have a big outdoor event.

For our event in 2018 we will “Celebrate 1918.”  We intend to reproduce a garden fete such as the one in the photograph which was taken long ago at a garden party in Hayton.  Of course in 1918 the country was suffering from the effects of the war which had started in 1914,  Most towns and villages had been fund raising for the war effort and Hayton was no exception.

But Hayton’s fete in 2018 is different -  we want to celebrate that incredible year.

1918 -  finally the Armistice was signed and the country could return to normal, the birth of the Royal Air Force and at last some women got the Vote -  so a great deal to celebrate.

“Celebrate 1918”  will be held on Saturday 21st July and will open at 3pm and finish around 5.30pm with a short concert.   It will be held on the Village Playing Field.  There will be stalls selling mostly handmade items, displays about the various events in 1918 and local history, children’s games,  a bar, and an afternoon tea in the marquee.

Adding to the atmosphere we will have re-enactors dressed in uniform, suffragettes, the Corps of Drums, a Scottish Piper, a music group and Irish Dancers.  For the children there will be a tray garden competition (make at home and bring) and for all a prize for the most spectacular 1918 style ladies or gents hat (because of course everyone wore a hat then !).  In the arena there will be a short soft-ball cricket match and a traditional Tug of War competition for anyone who joins one of the teams.

Finally we do hope that everyone will stay and enjoy a celebration tea and the short concert.    We are hoping for a bright sunny day, but there will be plenty of cover provided in case the weather is poor.   So please come and join in with Hayton to “Celebrate 1918”.
