The death of Hucknall policeman P.c Ballard was reported in the Hucknall Dispatch on 3rd December 1914.  Here are some notes from that report:-

Injured by shrapnel 6th November 1914

Died of wounds 7th November 1914

P.C. Ballard was 23 years old, and had moved to Hucknall shortly before the outbreak of war.  An incident included in the newspaper report of his death runs as follows:-

"The day before the news of his death came to hand, a little girl named Marjorie Mary Renshaw of Bentinck Street forwarded to him a woollen scarf which she had made, saying she wished to send something for 'her poiliceman'.  Needless to say the child feels the loss of a friend most keenly, and doubtless her kind thought and action is recorded Somewhere"
