Sherwood Foresters

Died April 1983 aged 86

Mr Abey, a native of Retford, was awarded the Military Medal in 1917 for "conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty".

Then a private in the Sherwood Foresters he earned the medal after carrying messages under heavy fire to the front lone before communication trenches had been dug and when no other means of communication were available.

Mr Abey subsequently rose to the rank of Sergeant and also served in the Second World War.
