Invitation to the Mayor's Sunday Service in Newark, 1891

Mr George Chew (to whom the invitation is addressed) was a retired grocer, living at No.1 Magnus Street, Newark.

Here is an extract from the newspaper report of the 1891 Mayor's Sunday service, from the Newark Advertiser 21st November, 1891:-

"On Sunday morning in accordance with ancient custom, the newly elected Mayor (Alderman Earp) attended service at the Parish Church.  His Worship received his guests in the Council Chamber, and there was an unusually large attendance of magistrates, members of the Corporation, borough officials, and townsmen, to accompny the Mayor.

A guard of homour was supplied by the Newark Volunteers, the officers in attendance being Captains Warwick and Marsland, Major Nicholson, and Liets. Huskinson and Branston.  Tho Volunteers kept the way clear to the church, the band being also in attendance.  The morning was very wet, but a considerable number assembled to watch the procession.

Within the Church there was a large congregation.  The service was very hearty, and an impressive address was delivered by the Vicar from Romans xiii, verses 4, 6 and 7.......

On leaving the church, the Mayor and his guests returned to the Town Hall where refreshments were provided by Mr. Jollands of the Clinton Arms, and the loving cup was handed round. 

The Mayor, in drinking the health of those present, thanked them for their attendance and said he thought the ceremony in which they were participating was so animating and inspiring to a new Mayor that he hoped it would be long before it was discontinued".
