Some Archard family History
The following is some family history relating to the Archard Family. Please note that the surname, particularly in early records, was given as 'Orchard'
The males previous to Thomas were William, George, Humphrey, George and Humphrey.
Thomas Archard bap. 25 Jun 1769 Swanbourne, married 12 Oct 1798 in Wing Rebecca Matthews who was bap 1779 in Wing. Thomas and Rebecca's children were Samuel bap 20 March 1803 Swanbourne, David bap 23 March 1806 in Swanbourne ansd Jonathan bap 16 April 1809 in Swanbourne.
David (bap 1806) married Anne Col(e)grove 15 January 1828 in Swanbourne. Anne was born 1806 in Swanbourne and died 21 December 1846 age 40 in Great Horwood. David died 20 March 1887 age 80 in Great Horwood. The children of David and Anne were Sophia born 1829, Josiah born 1831 in Swanbourne, George born 1834 in Swanbourne and twins James and John born 1839 in Great Horwood. Twin James died in 1840.
In the 1841 Census, David and his family were living in Church Street, Great Horwood, occupation Tailor: In 1851 they lived in West Street, Great Horwood, occupation Tailor. In 1861 they lived in Church Street, Great Horwood, occupation Tailor. In 1871 and 1881 they lived in High Street, Great Horwood.
Josiah was born in 1831, married Caroline MacKerness on 10 Aug 1857 in Whaddon. Josiah died in September quarter 1883 in Aston, Warwickshire. Caroline was bap 6 Novemeber 1823 in Whaddon and died in 1904 age 81 in Newark. Charles Josiah was their only child born in approx. May 1860.
In the 1871 census Josiah is listed as a Tailor, Caroline a milliner and bonnet maker, Charles a scholar living in High Street, Winslow. In the 1881 census Josiah is an Assurance Agent and, with Caroline, lived next door to the Chandos Arms in High St., Winslow.
1881 census C.J. Archard, age 21, a compositor, was unmarried and lodging with Ann Harris at 10 Redman Place, Sevenoaks, Kent.
By 1891 census C.J. Archard is listed as a journalist and author, and mother Caroline living in Bowbridge Lane, Newark. Ib the 1901 census C.J. and mother living in 17 Whitfield Street, Newark.
As we see from his obituary, C.J. never married.
C.J. Archard's death certificate gives the date of death as 24th March 1916 at 25 Winchilsea Avenue, Newark, aged 57. Causes of death are give as 1. Chronic Fibroid Phthisis 2. Dilatation of Heart. Exhaustion.
His probate was granted on 20th April 1916 showing he left £332.12s.8d. to Elizabeth Mason, wife of Henry Mason.
