‘On Our Doorstep’ is the result of a year’s partnership between Kingsway Primary school , Kirkby Library and Nottinghamshire Archives. The children learnt about their local community by looking at a range of local history resources such as census returns, parish registers, old photographs and maps. They had the opportunity to write with a quill pen and to see Victorian log books for their school as well as a colliery accident book that still smelt of coal. Each class looked at a different aspect of life in Kirkby, including employment, education, entertainment, churches and homes, comparing their own lives with those of their ancestors.
