...When Nottinghamshire villages first got their name signs...

From The Mansfield Advertiser, 18th February 1910 (p6 c1-2): -

"Within two months time every village in Notts is to have a name sign placed in a conspicuous position.  This welcome reform is due to the action of the Automobile Association  working in conjunction with the Notts Automobile Club, and will form the 'outward and visible' sign of the appreciation felt by those two bodies at the considerate treatment given to motorists in this county.

"These signs will, of course, be advantageous to motorists passing through the district, especially in the Dukeries where it is not easy for a stranger to find his way, but they will also be a convenience to other travellers"
