Post boxes

There are around 800 post boxes in Nottinghamshire.  Here are some favourite historical ones.

Not all post boxes are pillar boxes.  They may also be set into walls or strapped onto posts.  These last are known as 'Lamp Boxes' and are mainly found in rural areas where a wall or pillar box was uneconomical.

Roadside posting boxes were instigated by Anthony Trollope (subsequently famous as a novelist) whose main employment was with the GPO.  Post boxes were first erected on the Channel Islands in 1852 and were introduced to the UK mainland a year later in 1853.
